On Salmon

for Mommy

When salmon love,

it is not with heart but flesh.

Mother’s love weans to the very bone,

pelagic ivory so warm, so pale.

My life is an apology

for that of my mother.

I frolic, chasing june bugs in April,

red hearts around my ankle.

death becomes maternal,

slippery and eternal.
